Cardamom Price Trends: How to Read the Charts

Cardamom Price Trends — article cover

How to read cardamom price trends on SpiceValue charts: Puttady vs Bodi, sell-through and volatility, and when to check the AI price outlook.

A cardamom price forecast sounds like a decision. It is usually a headline with extra confidence. A trend is different: it is a description of prints that already happened, and you can check it against the Board row.

SpiceValue publishes both. The public auction path is on Charts: averages, max, sold quantity and centre splits from Spices Board India. The AI price outlook sits next to it, as an indicative estimate with a stated band, not a round number. This page is about reading the trend first, so the outlook has something to stand on.

Forecast vs trend vs today’s ticket

Three different questions get mixed up:

  • Today — what did the last well-attended session print? That is live prices and cardamom price today.
  • Trend — is this week rich or poor versus last month? That is charts.
  • Outlook — where might the average sit next session, and how wide is the honest range? That is Predictions. It is a band built from the archive, not a promise. How the AI prediction works explains what goes into it.

SpiceValue keeps those jobs in different tabs on purpose. Read them in that order.

What the charts are for

Charts are built on the small-cardamom archive — Puttady and Bodinayakanur, not a national spice index.

Use them for:

  • Puttady vs Bodinayakanur — whether the belt agrees or one hall is running hot
  • Sell-through — sold ÷ arrived; a firm average with weak clearance is a tired bid
  • Turnover and volatility — whether the week is a grind or a spike
  • City / centre analytics — context for a month, not for tomorrow’s lot

Do not use a year-long chart to decide whether to send a cured lot this afternoon. Do not use three live cards to decide whether to hold through a festival week. Best time to sell cardamom in Idukki is the working method; charts are the zoom level for “which week am I in?”

How to read a path without inventing a target

  1. Start with both centres. A one-centre spike is often quality mix or a thin book. See Puttady vs Bodinayakanur.
  2. Pair average with sell-through. Price without quantity is a caption.
  3. Prefer a few sessions over a year when you are trading this week. Stretch the range only when you are asking a seasonal question.
  4. Treat weather as a constraint, not a model. Rain in Idukki and Theni hits curing and later arrivals. Check belt weather; do not turn a forecast map into a price forecast.

A grind higher (or lower) across both halls with healthy sold quantity is a trend. A one-day high that fades on the next well-attended auction is a session event. Charts exist so you can see which one you are in.

What the AI outlook can and cannot carry

Small cardamom is a thin, high-value market. Arrivals, export packing, stockist lists and quality mix can move an afternoon without a “national” story. That is why the Predictions page gives a next-auction estimate with a band, a 30 and 90-day direction, and a seasonal calendar, rather than one number for next month.

What it can carry: ten years of Board history, the arrivals-versus-price relationship, seasonal ratios and the recent streak. What it cannot carry: your lot’s colour, moisture and recovery, or a stockist list that changes on Tuesday.

So use it after the chart, not instead of the Board row. If the trend on both halls and the outlook agree, you have context. If they disagree, the chart and the sold quantity win, because they already happened.

A “what happens next” routine

You will not out-forecast every stockist. You can still be disciplined:

  • Ready, sorted lot + healthy sell-through at your nearer centre → offer
  • Pretty average on a thin book → wait for the next full session
  • Outlook band leaning up but arrivals rising fast → treat the band as a ceiling, not a floor
  • Wet belt and unfinished curing → you are still farming, not calling the market

That is a plan, not a forecast. For the stack of auction versus farm-gate versus export quotes, keep Indian spice market prices next to the charts. For the table behind the path, use cardamom auction results.
